51st Thankful Thursday: Jesus Christ and His Atonement

I am grateful for my Savior, Jesus Christ, who came to earth, lived, suffered, bled, died, and lives again.  I am grateful for the peace and purity I am able to feel through the cleansing power of His Atonement.  I know He knows and loves me.  I know He knows and loves you too.  In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

This week: Why are you grateful for Christ, or, what is something someone has done for you which you are grateful for?

"I Stand All Amazed"

I stand all amazed at the love Jesus offers me,
Confused at the grace that so fully he proffers me.
I tremble to know that for me he was crucified,
That for me, a sinner, he suffered, he bled and died.

O it is wonderful that he should care for me
Enough to die for me!
Oh it is wonderful, wonderful to me!

I marvel that he would descend from his throne divine
To rescue a soul so rebellious and proud as mine,
That he should extend his great love unto such as I,
Sufficient to own, to redeem, and to justify.

O it is wonderful that he should care for me

Enough to die for me!
Oh it is wonderful, wonderful to me!

I think of his hands, pierced and bleeding to pay the debt!
Such mercy, such love and devotion can I forget?
No, no, I will praise and adore at the mercy seat,
Until at the glorified throne I kneel at his feet.

O it is wonderful that he should care for me

Enough to die for me!
Oh it is wonderful, wonderful to me!

Text and music: Charles H. Gabriel, 1856-1932
From Hymns of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1985, #193

PS I've heard this hymn sung magnificently by a tenor, but was unable to find a video or recording to share.  :(  Please, please share any links to renditions of this or other uplifting songs you love.  :)

PPS A few of my favorite scriptures on the Atonement, from the Book of Mormon: Alma 7: 10-16

  1. I am grateful to God for music – for giving us the capacity to appreciate it and composers who have shared their talents to help the rest of us to pray. These are some of my favorites:

All creatures of our God and king
    All things bright and beautiful
    Alleluia, Alleluia
    Handel’s Amen
Angels we have heard on high
    Away in a manger
    Be still my soul
    Climb every mountain
    Dona nobis pacem
    Father we thank thee
For the beauty of the earth
    Foxlease vesper
    Gaudeamus hodie
Glory to thee my God this night
God shall wipe away all tears
    He shall feed his flock
    His yoke is easy
    I heard the bells
    I’ll fly away
It came upon the midnight clear
    Kumbaya
    Let me love
Now thank we all our God
    Now the day is over
    O holy night
On my honor I will try
    Panis angelicus
Praise God from whom all blessings flow
    Mozart’s Requiem
Surely he hath borne our griefs
    Sweet hour of prayer
    Turn to me
    We gather together
We will understand it better by and by
When the saints go marching in

  2. Oh my goodness! Thank you for posting such a wonderfully long and beautiful list!!! I haven't heard of several of these, and am listening to Dona nobis pacem right now (gorgeous!).

I am also grateful for the music that sings the prayer I had no words for. Thank you so much for brightening my day!!! :) :) :)
